They completed the movie without the bikes. Then, before filming was completed the remaining three bikes were stolen. Turns out, he sold a lot of “original” Captain America’s, and I question his credibility. I love Grizzly Adams, but his stories are all over the place. The backup captain America bike was pretty much destroyed by the ending scene, and what was left of it was given to Dan Haggerty. Two were made for filming, and the other two were backups. 49 though 51 Police Panheads, Bought at auction and customized for the low budget movie Easy Rider by local LA bike builders Ben Hardy and Cliff Vaughs. We know this: There were four bikes made for Easy Rider. Who Stole them? I gotta think that someone out there, knows what happened. Before filming concluded, the remaining 3 bikes were stolen. The Billy bike, while less famous was also made. It produced the arguably most famous and iconic bike of all time, the Captain America chopper. You can build a bike identical to this from a kit probably today, but it will cost you as much as buying a new Harley Softail, which will look similar and have some rear suspension, disc brakes, and an electric start.Easy Rider was filmed Starting in late February of 1968. There is no electric start on this bike- kickstart only. There is NO rear suspension other than the air pressure in the rear tire.

This used to be a stock Panhead FLH motorcycle that Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper had modified (for the film) into the style that today is called a "bobber"- they "bobbed" (like a haircut) all the weight off of it they could and gave it a nifty paint job. That bike was built in the 1950s (rigid frame, Panhead engine, 4 spoeed transmission, and forks), the fenders were removed and a flat rear fender installed and one off a British TT bike installed on the front, the seat was removed and replaced with a "cobra" seat (looks something like the head of a cobra when seen from above), the footboards were removed and foot pegs installed at the front footboard mounting point, the front wheel was swapped for a narrower 21" wheel, the tin shroud was removed from the top of the forks and a smaller headlight was installed, the fork tubes were replaced with tubes that were 8" longer than stock, a smaller "Mustang" gas tank was installed, and the handlebars were replaced with "drag bars" on tall risers.
